What do you really think about Windows Vista?

I know a lot of people have had problems with Windows Vista, but with all the updates and patches I think it is quiet good now.. I am using it everyday now, and it seems to be great...
I have seen a few computers or laptops that were bought with Vista installed on it which are so slow...I would throw them out the window.. This is because when Microsoft released Windows Vista they said it only needed 512MB of memory when in fact it need more than double that... They made the same mistake with XP saying it needed 256MB... Get real!!!!
I was fixing a New Vista laptop that cost a fortune, with only 512mb ram... The guy wanted to know why it was so slow... Well it was obvious.. All the flashy things were using all the memory up.. It was a night mare... And don't get me started on all the trial programs that came with it...AHHHHH
Windows Vista runs well on a fast machine with a good video card and lots of memory..
What do you think about Windows Vista?
Is it running ok now???

I agree totally...
I recently had Windows XP pro on a computer with similar specs to yours but XP couldn't deal with it...When I put Vista on the computer it was so fast and fantastic that it blew my mind.

I still prefer XP, but its true that Vista can at least use the extra RAM. I have 4G DDR3-1333 but since I insist on still using XP, I cant actually use all of this RAM lol. I would make the point though that XP runs just as fast with 2G RAM as Vista does, in my opinion. Vista would start to make gains once you provided it with the extra RAM that XP cant use.
There is no doubt that Vista is a more advanced operating system, and much more capable of using the many improvements in technology that have come up since XP was in its prime. I personally think that for the geek, Vista makes it just a little too hard to make little changes to, and I dont particularly like the interface.
You often hear that Vista is resource hungry, and although this is totally true, its designed for a modern system with modern resources, and gets a bad press from people who try to run it on the inferior machines it is sold in at the shops. If you give Vista what it really wants, particularly lots of RAM and a decent video card, it works very well indeed.
As for your PC Ryan, very nice. I am thinking a new 'Brag Board' might be a good thing, where those of us with nice machines can post and boast

xp has a smaller overhead when running, (meaning it has less cpu time and also less memory) and so can run faster if the user doesnt have a lot of programs running, but if you have a nice pc, like this one, xp was not intended to handle it, and with many pcs now coming out with >3.25 Gigs of ram, the user cannot even use it all, as most people do not have xp corp 64 bit (the only 64 bit version of xp) and so in my oppinion it would be useless to install xp on a new pc.
but once again that is my oppinion and my opinion should not be taken as rule, many people still love xp, and for now, i think thats ok
<--- TO DAK --->
as for not being able to see the ram in xp, that is true, you cannot use or access the extra ram in xp, but the system, meaning xp itself can still use this ram and will use the ram if the situation calls for it, its just not quite as efficient as the first 3.25 gigs.
still better than paging though

I have XP,and I am quite happy.I don't need the biggest, best or fastest. XP has stood me in good stead, and have no incentive to buy,or build a Rocket Ship, just to run Vista.
I will stick with XP,till Windows 7 arrives,as I am not prepared to go through the learning curve,of Vista.
I read Vista Forums, all the time, and to me it poses more issues, than benefits.
There are still millions who use Xp,and are not prepared to spend extra Dollars on an OS,for a bit of Candy.
Many are even prepared to pay a penalty, just to return to XP.
M$ misjudged the following XP still has. That's why they have kept changing the cut off date.

ah, xp was just like vista when it came out, till sp1, then people started to see the light, you cant put vista down, its not all about the bells and whistles, but i also know what you are saying in relation to xp, as i was the same way before, and just to let all users know, 7 is more like release 2 of vista, a smaller kernel, some new features and code rewrites, better uac and libraries.
on the flipside, to anyone thinking about getting vista, but whom arent sure, you only have a few months more to wait for 7, and really, you may as well wait.
but i hope you like whatever it is you may choose
and also the learning curve with vista... the only thing that took me a while to figure out was the control panel interface, and that was only because i was so used to using xp

I fully understand what your saying,about waiting,as that's what I am doing.
Windows 7 promises to be a vast improvement, with some great features.
One thing I will never get is a touch screen.Screens and Chocolate don't mix.

My opinion of Vista has actually improved vastly, When I first got this Laptop I'm on now Vista was an absolute pain in my behind I got Bluescreens it was unstable whenever I did anything for the first 2 or 3 days I was just about ready to go take the laptop back and get my Money back it cost £400 down from £600 during the sales in December and January (It was a good laptop for the price, Spec at bottom).
So as a last resort I used the Recovery Disk which was supplied with it as soon as I used that loaded it back up and installed the updates it worked like a dream and I've never had a problem since it had about 70 processes running at Start-Up steadily as I tweaked it, stopped some unnecessary services and uninstalled some programs I got it down to about 55-56 processes, when I load the laptop up now I kill the Java Update process amongst others which gets it down to the low 50's with MSN and Firefox running which isn't bad to say Vista has about 12 svchost.exe processes running and about 6 processes can be attributed to my Avast Anti-Virus Software.
So overall apart from the bad start with my Laptop I'm pretty pleased with Vista, just one little annoyance is the UAC (I know I can turn it off by the way
) but normally it doesn't bother me.
Laptop Spec - Samsung R505
OS - 32bit Vista Home Premium
Processor - AMD Turion X2 RM-72 @ 2.1GHz (Dual Core), 1MB Cache, 1800MHz Hypertransport Bus
RAM - 3GB
HDD - 250GB
Graphics Card - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 - 256MB

I would be interesed in seeing a list of processes that you have stopped in Vista? This would really help some users to speed up Windows Vista if they are short on memory.

I just used this list I found while searching Google -
http://www.speedyvista.com/services5min.php
I haven't done it all so I might be able to cut the processes down a bit more, But it is more based on personal preferences, I disabled the Readyboost Service for example because I don't either use it or have a USB Drive which can be used with Readyboost. But I also did stop some programs from loading at Startup, overall I doubt people would get much lower than 50 processes but that's just me if I didn't need WLAN Services I could stop 3 more processes. But hey I guess it's there
My System currently is around 49-51 processes when I'm not running any Applications, it's around mid 50's with some Applications running and it would only take about 750MB of my 3GB RAM running Vista alone, down from about 1GB, so I've managed to save about 250MB which is getting taken back up by Firefox and MSN

Windows Vista runs very well in my system. I have 2GB RAM and Core2duo Processor. I think speed depends upon Processor and RAM. If you have Good processor and Good amount of RAM then all OS will run Faster.
