i have had a similar problem before.
My username in this forum ( for email purposes) is dak@pctipforum.com, but in order to login i needed to enter my username as dak+pctipforum.com.
I assisted a friend recently setting up t-bird on his vista laptop, and his username is XXXX@bigpond.com, but it was necessary to do the same thing, it wouldnt work until I entered his username as XXXX+bigpond.com.
If you need an @ in your username, you could maybe try it too, substituting + for @ ?

Thanks Dak,for the clue. Before I never had to log in.
Is there a setting that gives one that option?
I would like to delete my account completely, but can't see where to,and start a fresh.
I can't see where to.
I have spent hours and got nowhwere as yet.
The mail server Password log in will not accept my 7 didit password.
It just reappears time after time to fill in.
If I click OK then I get this (Screenshot)
Thats why I would like to delete my account, and get help to configure properly.
Thanks for any help.

first, try and change your username as i suggested.
in the main tbird window, click on tools>account settings> and under the optusnet account you will find 'server settings' If you cant see 'server settings' then click the + next to the account name and it will drop a menu down.
there you can rename the account if you want (this is just the name you allocate it for your own purposes, and makes no difference to the function) and your username. Substitute the @ for a + in the username, click ok, to close the window. Now, in the main window, click get mail and see if it works.

sorry i am not thinking clearly, its late.
on the server settings tab, the account name needs to be the name of your server, ie. mail.optusnet.com.au and changing it will make the account not work.
the account name which you can change is one up on the tree, the one you expanded to see the server settings option.
In these shots, the outgoing server is my personal email server, not one of my websites. You would have this server set as mail.optusnet.com.au
It is only necessary to have one outgoing server, but to check emails from multiple accounts on different servers, you need more than one incoming server.

Hi again Dak.This is the way it was configured without changes.
I took out the @ and replaced with the + and no difference.
I will try and delete the account.
EDIT Sorry I missed your post

If you mean when I put the address to send the email to,YES.
It said not a proper email address.
Just a couple of quick questions.
I set it as pop3???
Your outgoing server address SMTP is different.
What should I enter in mine?
I can see a mistake in my screenshot. In server settings Username you have a full email address whereas I only have my name.
Thanks Dak.

the username is the one i am suggesting should be either your full email address or substitute + for the @ in your email address
the one that says 'not a proper email address' will require your email address with the @, this is the one people will enter to send email to you.
yes, optusnet uses a pop3 server
your smtp (outgoing) server should have exactly the same details as your incoming server

That's a great help,Dak. Really appreciate your help.
I will change all this in the morning.
I have Pesticide poisoning and feel quite ill just now.
I will make the changes, take screen shots and if you could check them tomorrow, would be great.
I will have to rest now mate.

UPDATE
. Thunderbird is now working fine. There were a number of small errors, which I changed.
Thanks so much
Dak
,for helping me.You had the right answers, and I followed your screenshots.
Also I had a tick in the password box, which was also creating problems.
I have tested, and can't fault it now.
Appreciate your help,as I was lost.

You are welcome
Out of curiosity, since I have seen the + vs @ issue before, did you need to use the + ? I am curious to know if this applies to all tbird connections, or just some servers.

No, I didn't have to use the + option
Dak
,so must as you say, apply only to some servers.
I am going to take screen shots of all entered information,so in future I will know exactly how to fill in.
